::intersection performed live at o meu Mercedes::

It's been a while since the last time we posted anything on this blog, in the mean time we've kept ourselves busy. We've done quite a few things since ou last gig .

Though we are still recording our new work our attention has lately been focused on live performances. Originaly we wanted to finish the CD and do a mini tour to promote it, but we soon realised that we wouldn't have enough time to do both things in the time frame we had availlable. So we decided not to rush things and to start our live shows anyway. This way we'll be able to show our new songs to the audience whilst recording them and get a fell on how they react to them. But we'll get to the gigs soon enough, first a report about how things are going recording wise.

Since our last post (no, not never endig story, that one i screwed up whilst trying out a firefox extension for blogging and had to repost it) we mainly went about recording vocal tracks. 'Intersection', 'event horizon' and 'home' all have (i hope) their definitive vocals recorded and we already started working on mixing 'home'. I hope we have the chance to finish recording the last of teh old songs missing (leftover glass... and newborn) as well as work on the vocals for all of them. A need is felt to close a chapter that started last year in the life of the band and start working harder on the new songs. And now the gigs.

Bands make or break on stage, as good as the studio experience maybe, if a band can't translate it to the stage you can't call it a band and it doesn't matter how much you rehearse nothing can substitute the experience you get from being on the road. It's a whole structure you have to create around you, it's the logistics you have to grasp, it's knowing how to deal with tensions that build up, the nerves, getting tired from the trips, everything that makes you and you fellow band members edgy. It's all part of the road experience and it's something we desperattly need if we are going to have any future in music. We as a band must learn how to grasp all these aspects while we are small and without any kind of outside pressure upon us, we must outlive them and hope that the end result is a tighter, stronger, more understanding group of better musicians.

'o meu Mercedes é maior que o teu' is a bar on the riverside of Porto (the second largest city in Portugal) where quite a few sounding names from the alternative international (and national too) scene have played and one of the most beautiful you can find in Porto. The gig went by like the day had gone before it, havoc. Infernal traffic jams in the highway and in Porto, arriving late to the gig, tight soundcheck, eating dinner in a rush and finishing it 5 minutes before Looney Tones (our friends that opened the gig that night) went on stage, changing while they were playing, and finally getting up on stage.

The audience was generous to us, most of the about 100 persons that were filling the bar (a lot of them coming from Vale de Cambra to give their support to Looney Tones) cheered us on at the end of each song and the gig rushed by and was over before we had the chance to figure out if it was being any good or not. At the end we had the usual post gig remarks from those that liked the show, we thanked Pedro from Looney Tones for replacing a broken string at the end of teh second song we played, we tried to understand amongst us what it had been like: "could you hear anything on stage?", "no, not a thing, what happened to your amp in the last song?", "I don't know i just had enough time to rip the cable out of the pedalboard plug it straight into the amp and keep playing like that", all of it condensed in the time we took to get everything in our cars and drive back to Coimbra. It was almost like taking a bite out of an icecream just before it fell on the floor, we barely had the chance to taste it. I hope we'll be able to play there again, with more time, and with a better chance to apreciate that stage, and the night life at the bar after the gig.

A week later, Soure, 100% Bar. Soure is a small town in the outskirts of Coimbra. The absolute opposite experience we had teh week before. O meu Mercedes is a bar with a long history of live performances and with a audience that is used to that and to seeing a lot of bands playing live. 100% bar is taking it's first steps in this arena and you play for an audience that's just starting to get used to having musicians there playing. We had all the time in the world, we arrived early, did our soundcheck, had dinner with the guys organizing the gig, engaged on a hours long conversation about music that allowed us to realize how friendly and dedicated those people were to doing something about promoting music in their town with the few means they had.
It was a grey gig, with not many people watching, but that curiously were a lot more expressive when the gig was over inviting us to chat with them and have drinks. I think what we got out of teh Gig first and foremost was Miguel's (who organized the gig) and the bar owners simpathy and friendliness, after the gig they made sure our glasses were never empty and we kept on talking for a while afterwards. The trip back home was filled with laughter as Santiago's car honked out of control whenever he needed to turn the steering wheel.

Bring them on the more gigs the better, and the more different they are, the more experienced and ready we'll be.

<=>

Last saturday the 11th we finally got to get out of the studio and of studying and played in Rock of Cantanhede. It's a local music show promoted yearly to give a boost to local bands. We played on the second day along with Double G, You Should Go Ahead and Banheira Azul.

The place was nice, and old 18 century theater judging from the trompe l'oeil paintings. The guys from the staff were all smiles and they managed to keep everything according to schedule something not all that common to such initiatives. The technical side othings were ok as well, the technical staff were competent and that always helps our work a lot. Also we got a taste of that country side home cooking at dinner, everybody that was working on the show was there shraing the meal. We were schedulled to open the gig.
For us it was a chance to relax, forget about exams and the recording work. Our 40 minutes passed flying by us and we ended up not being able to play all the songs we had in the line up. 'a new day rising', intersection', 'about the...', 'self aware', 'newborn', 'stella' e 'event horizon' were all that we were able to cram in our due time, still we were already in debt with the organization since they kindly delayed the start of the show so we could have a bigger crowd watching us. The crowd was considerable when we started playing and it kept getting bigger.
After the show exaustion started creeping in and we fought it off with the free beer our passes awarded us with and managed to see Double G and You Should Go Ahead after that we decided we had had enough packed up and went home.
A really dense fog kept us in our toes while driving back home but everything went ok.

<=>

That must be the only Bob Geldof i can recall the chorus from... Well, with the guys deeply buried studying for their exams I was left all by myself to go on ahead and do my share of the guitar work on the songs and thankfully it was something that I was also really needing to do, I needed to get a feel of what they were going to sound once everything was finished.
Since the last post João recorded the bass for 'speedtrap' and I followed on the guitar. I have to admit that working on speetrap was not one of most pleasent things i could think of, there are other songs that need to be worked on and I really wasn't that much into it. All i could think of was 'I've done this before, it's just repeating the same thing again' but I decided not to leave it behind and go for it anyway. It's not that the song has anything wrong or is less good than any of the others, it's just that since Zé (Pini) left the band it was never the same song again. It wa sone of the songs that he put more effort in and when he left it was almost like a piece of that song's soul left with him. I needed to make it work again, I needed to breathe life back into into it, to give back what Pini took when he went away and that's what I tried to do and I guess I managed to. The end result I think doesn't betray what Pini though up for speedtrap, but it's diferent and it had to be because we changed and the songs have to change too, to face the new reality of the band.
The same way speedtrap changed, so did 'whom no man...'. I worked on it yesterday and it has a brand new face, one that made my own light up with a smile. Finally it sounds like i had imagined it a year ago, finally it has the strength I wanted it to have, finally! I guess it will make life for us harder later because we won't be able to play it live like we have it recorded, but some things are more important, the idea I had originally is finally real.
But not all is studio and recording, we will be playing live the 11th of February on a small town near coimbra on a show organized by a local club for promoting new talents. It'll be good to go back on stage and change scenary. Right now what I really feel like is working on more of the new songs with the rest of the band and see new ideas bloom, and then to translate them all to the stage wich will be quite a chalenge.

<=>

Well to set things straight it was more like two nights. On Tuesday i finally found some time to catch up on my guitar work and even managed to get most of the keyboard parts finished. Finally I killed my midi ghost and spent half the night playing with VST Instruments and with reason trying to find 'the sound' for 5A.M. Haven't quite got it yet, but it's coming.
Last night as a night with all the guys and a much needed change from the usual lonely sessions we had done so far. Needless to say it's a lot more fun to work with all of the gang even though we probably do less but being in a banda isn't just work though it comes first, the friendship and goofing off is an important part of it.
João recorded the bass for all the songs that remained and Roquinho most of his guitar parts for the yet unnamed song (wich will probably be called 'Event horizon' by the way), generally we did pretty good. We managed to start on yet another of the new songs called 'About the insurrection of the broke' defining tempo's and rithm signatures but besides that we didn't go further than recording the ground tracks and the first drums take.
Well definetly slow down before the weekend, most of the guys have exams and study time is needed. Thought of the day, the downright fabulous statement by Roquinho, 'Absolutely by chance, but pretty none the less', sometimes chance favours us but it's best no to rely on it ;)

the Profane Joy of Musichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16857477784423291419noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20596777.post-1136927072802031522006-01-10T20:22:00.000+00:002006-01-12T01:28:39.203+00:00a ressaca :: the hangover

Ainda vou ver se me aventuro nuns teclados... ...se o tempo permitir. Amanhã mais baixo e bateria

<=>

Well yesterday we ended up doing nothing and quite frankly it was for the best because i was in no condition to do any work. Besides spending Sunday night recording with Santiago we also went to see a two band gig Saturday night in a club here in Coimbra. The show only started at about 01h30m A.M. with 'Bruto & the Cannibals' and kept going through the night with the 'Speeding Bullets' we only hit the sack really late. It was worth it because i hadn't seen a rockabilly show in quite a while and Coimbra used to be full with such bands. The atmosphere at these show is always so surreal.

What happens after two nights out? (well three but that's another story) your brain turns to jelly and you start to see pictures like the one on the left, so i decided to cancell any recording commitments for Monday.

Today we returned to work with Roquinho laying down some guitar tracks for 'Home' and '5 A.M.' during the afternoon and i'm bound for the studio right after i finish this post to catch up on my guitar work. If all goes well i might even do some keyboards. Tomorrow more drums and bass...

" e "About the insurrection of the broke" portanto é melhor pensar em gravar as minhas partes que faltam.

<=>

Yesterday we spent most of the afternoon laying out some of Roquinho's guitar tracks. We worked mainly in one of the new songs named "Stella" and an old one "Whom no man may seeketh after" that we are re-recording.

As you can see in the photo's Roquinho has finisihed building and is now using his new pedalboard that he filled up with is favourite stomp boxes. He was using his Fender Hot Rod as his main amp in this session.

I was supposed to have started working on some of my guitar tracks on "Stella", "Whom no man..." and "Self Aware" that we are also re-recording but I wasn't really in the mood. Maybe later I'll get inspired to do so. Anyway, this weekend we are supposed to lay down drum tracks for a couple of songs, some of them new like "5 A.M. " and "About the insurrection of the broke" so better start thinking about finishing my tracks soon.

Two thought's for today, I'd better start thinking about choosing some smaller song titles, and i wish we hadn't chosen the all black decoration in our studio, it really makes documenting the sessions with photographs a lot harder. Cameras simply don't like all black rooms.

<=>

Abraços para todos, este fim de semana alguem deve meter mais um post aqui ;) :: Cheers to all of you guys, someone is bound to make a new post this weekend.

It's always a good idea to start things at the beginning, and obviously we had no choice but to do it with our own blog. By the way 'we', the Profane Joy of Music, are four guys that got together thanks to our love of music and that started making it instead of just listening to it.
You will be able to find everything about the band at www.profanejoy.com (once we get our english version going). In the mean time even if you can understand a word of portuguese you can check out our songs and lyrics (in english) here...
Anyway, though we have a website with all the usual stuff, bio, mp3, the works, we though that a blog was needed so we could get across some aspects of what it means for us to be in a band and so here it is and since we are recording a new album now we'll have plenty of stuff to post here.
