Rock of Cantanhede

Foi no Sábado passado dia 11 que participamos no Rock of Cantanhede organização pela secção de espetáculos do Clube União Vilanovense com o intuito de promover novos valores da música nacional. Para além de nós os Double G, os You should Go Ahead e os Banheira Azul subiram ao palco nesse dia.

O recinto era agradavel, provavelmente um antigo teatro do sec. 18 a julgar pelas pinturas trompe l'oeil que ladeavam o palco. O pessoal da organização recebeu-nos com simpatia e foi capaz de manter os trabalhos dentro dos horários estipulados sem os atrasos de soundchecks que tantas vezes ocorrem nestas iniciativas. Boas eram tambem as condições a nível técnico, com uma equipa competente no som o que facilita sempre em muito o nosso trabalho e não podemos deixar de fazer menção ao excelente jantar onde se reuniram todas as pessoas envolvidas no evento, uma verdadeira mostra da gastronomia local . Coube-nos a tarefa de abrir as hostilidades.

Foi um concerto para relaxar, para tirar a cabeça dos exames e do trabalho que ainda nos falta fazer no disco. Os 40 minutos que nos tinham sido atribuidos passaram a voar e acabamos por não tocar todos temas que tinhamos previstos no alinhamento. 'a new day rising', intersection', 'about the...', 'self aware', 'newborn', 'stella' e 'event horizon' foi o que o nosso tempo regulamentar nos permitiu tocar sendo que de qualquer forma já estavamos em dívida com a organização que amavelmente atrasou a nossa entrada em palco para que a casa estivesse mais coimposta. A massa humana era já consideravel quando começamos a tocar e continuou a crescer com o decorrer do concerto.
Com a saída do palco começaram a sentir-se as mazelas da semana, as noites sem dormir por causa dos exames e o cansaço instaurou-se, lutamos contra eles munidos de copos de cerveja oferecidos pela organização e ainda resistimos o suficiente para ver a actuação dos Double G e dos You Should Go Ahead.
Voltamos para Coimbra através de um nevoeiro cerrado que nos fez percorrer todo o caminho com cuidados redobrados. Foi um Sábado bem passado.

Last saturday the 11th we finally got to get out of the studio and of studying and played in Rock of Cantanhede. It's a local music show promoted yearly to give a boost to local bands. We played on the second day along with Double G, You Should Go Ahead and Banheira Azul.

The place was nice, and old 18 century theater judging from the trompe l'oeil paintings. The guys from the staff were all smiles and they managed to keep everything according to schedule something not all that common to such initiatives. The technical side othings were ok as well, the technical staff were competent and that always helps our work a lot. Also we got a taste of that country side home cooking at dinner, everybody that was working on the show was there shraing the meal. We were schedulled to open the gig.
For us it was a chance to relax, forget about exams and the recording work. Our 40 minutes passed flying by us and we ended up not being able to play all the songs we had in the line up. 'a new day rising', intersection', 'about the...', 'self aware', 'newborn', 'stella' e 'event horizon' were all that we were able to cram in our due time, still we were already in debt with the organization since they kindly delayed the start of the show so we could have a bigger crowd watching us. The crowd was considerable when we started playing and it kept getting bigger.
After the show exaustion started creeping in and we fought it off with the free beer our passes awarded us with and managed to see Double G and You Should Go Ahead after that we decided we had had enough packed up and went home.
A really dense fog kept us in our toes while driving back home but everything went ok. All in all it was a great way to spend ou saturday.

Que deve ser por ignorância minha a unica musica do Bob Geldof que me vem assim à cabeça e cujo refrão conheço... Enfim, com os rapazes completamente embrenhados no estudo tenho tido tempo para ir tratando das minhas partes nas músicas, que é o que eu estava a precisar porque finalmente começo a ter uma ideia de como o produto final vai soar apesar de ainda faltar muito para lá chegarmos.

Desde o ultimo post o João já gravou o baixo da 'speedtrap' e eu dediquei-me à guitarra. Tenho que admitir que trabalhar na speedtrap não me parecia a coisa mais agradavel do mundo. Temos mais músicas à espera de serem gravadas e na altura em que comecei esse trabalho lá no fundo da minha cabeça só conseguia pensar que isto era repetir esforços, que já tinha gravado a música uma vez no ano passado e que não me apetecia pegar nela de novo. Mas tinha que ser feito e resolvi não a deixar para trás. Não que a música tenha algo de errado, ou seja menos boa que as outras, mas desde que o Zé (Pini) saiu da banda que nunca mais foi o mesmo tocar a música. Foi talvez das músicas em que ele mais se empenhou em termos de composição e quando foi embora levou esse pedaço com ele. Eu precisava de a voltar a fazer funcionar, dar-lhe vida nova pós-Pini e foi o que tentei fazer. Acho que o resultado final não trai a ideia que o Zé tinha da 'speedtrap' mas é diferente e era necessário que fosse diferente porque se a banda mudou ao entrarem e sairem pessoas então as músicas tambem tem que mudar e adaptar-se à nova realidade da banda.
Da mesma forma que a speedtrap mudou a whom no man... a que eu me dediquei ontem também levou cara nova e mudou a expressão carrancuda que eu tinha na cara durante estes ultimos dias. Finalmente soa como eu a tinha imaginado há um ano atrás, finalmente tem a força que eu queria que ela tivesse, finalmente! É certo que talvez não seja possível tocar a música ao vivo da mesma forma que ela vai ficar gravada, mas há coisas que são mais importantes, a ideia original que estava na minha cabeça consegui-a finalmente ouvir concretizada.
Mas estudio e gravações não são tudo e temos um concerto marcado para dia 11 de Fevereiro no Rock of Cantanhede, uma mostra de música moderna organizada pelo Clune União Vilanovense em (obviamente) Cantanhede. Vai ser bom voltar ao palco e mudar de ares, neste momento o que me apetece mesmo é encerrar um ciclo e começar outro, começar a trabalhar nas musicas novas com o resto da banda e ver novas ideias a despontar e depois traduzir o nosso trabalho em estudio para o palco o que vai ser um desafio e pêras mas que me deixa ainda mais motivado.

That must be the only Bob Geldof i can recall the chorus from... Well, with the guys deeply buried studying for their exams I was left all by myself to go on ahead and do my share of the guitar work on the songs and thankfully it was something that I was also really needing to do, I needed to get a feel of what they were going to sound once everything was finished.
Since the last post João recorded the bass for 'speedtrap' and I followed on the guitar. I have to admit that working on speetrap was not one of most pleasent things i could think of, there are other songs that need to be worked on and I really wasn't that much into it. All i could think of was 'I've done this before, it's just repeating the same thing again' but I decided not to leave it behind and go for it anyway. It's not that the song has anything wrong or is less good than any of the others, it's just that since Zé (Pini) left the band it was never the same song again. It wa sone of the songs that he put more effort in and when he left it was almost like a piece of that song's soul left with him. I needed to make it work again, I needed to breathe life back into into it, to give back what Pini took when he went away and that's what I tried to do and I guess I managed to. The end result I think doesn't betray what Pini though up for speedtrap, but it's diferent and it had to be because we changed and the songs have to change too, to face the new reality of the band.
The same way speedtrap changed, so did 'whom no man...'. I worked on it yesterday and it has a brand new face, one that made my own light up with a smile. Finally it sounds like i had imagined it a year ago, finally it has the strength I wanted it to have, finally! I guess it will make life for us harder later because we won't be able to play it live like we have it recorded, but some things are more important, the idea I had originally is finally real.
But not all is studio and recording, we will be playing live the 11th of February on a small town near coimbra on a show organized by a local club for promoting new talents. It'll be good to go back on stage and change scenary. Right now what I really feel like is working on more of the new songs with the rest of the band and see new ideas bloom, and then to translate them all to the stage wich will be quite a chalenge.
